It is a Sunday morning, and the gentle pitter-patter of rain greeted me as I woke up. Despite the darkness, I noticed it was later than my usual wake-up time. The day ahead held a promise of clothes and shoe shopping with Kelly, but the rain made me opt for a cozy meal at home instead. Preparing chicken schnitzel, string beans, mashed potatoes, and salad, I settled with a cup of tea in hand, engrossed in Dostoevsky’s dark tale, finding solace in the routine of the day.

After deciding to escape the book’s gloom, I ventured downstairs to start preparing the meal, my mind drifting back to moments shared with Peter, the comforting melodies of the radio serving as a backdrop. Recollections of peaceful winter evenings spent together resurfaced, highlighting the simple joys of togetherness and aimless drives that brought a sense of serenity.

During a mundane trip to a supermarket to grab some milk, an encounter with a strikingly glamorous couple, seemingly straight out of a fashion magazine, revealed a surprising truth. Despite their opulent appearance, the couple discretely paid with food stamps, prompting a moment of reflection. Walking out arm in arm, Peter and I shared a silent understanding, reaffirming our sense of self-worth and contentment in being true to ourselves, devoid of pretense or false airs.
