The Changes
It is a chilly morning. It has been a chilly few days. I have graduated from my flannel nighties to my muslin long sleeved ones. Perhaps I should have stayed in my flannel ones for just a little while longer, for I felt a bit cold. When I changed to my day clothes, I thought to myself, it doesn’t matter what month it is, I am cold! So I wore velour pants, heavy socks, and a heavy top. As I looked at myself in the mirror, I could not help but chuckle. My mind went back to a day many years ago. We were in the middle of a snowstorm. It was evening. With the help of heavy winds, the snow was rushing down relentlessly. The winds howled as they pushed the snow to the ground. In the middle of this, I was having my hot flashes. I was having a hard time breathing. My face felt so warm! I was dressed to the bare minimum that modesty allowed. I had opened the bedroom windows wide open. Poor Peter was shivering and shaking from the cold. Being Peter, he did not utter a word of objection.
The phone rang. Peter answered it. It was my sister in LA. In a cheerful voice, she asked, “How are you doing?”
Very nonchalantly, he replied, “We are doing fine. We are in the middle of a snowstorm. It is -10 F. and the wind is howling. Your sister is going through her changes and is really feeling some serious hot flashes! She has opened all the windows in the bedroom! That’s how we’re doing!”
Remembering that moment in time, this morning, I could not help but chuckle! Peter had such an amazing sense of humor!
