I saw a photo today that transported me back in time and place. It took me back to my youth. It took me back to summers in Salzburg where Papa had decided to send my sister and me. It took me back to Professor and Frau Fellner’s garden. Papa wanted us to learn German and absorb the music and the culture Mozart’s jewel of a city.

It is a chilly morning today. The weak winter sun is valiantly attempting to peek through the fat heavily laden clouds and enter our bedroom, but in my mind’s eye, I am sauntering through that summer garden in Salzburg. I smell the heady perfume of the fragrant flowers as they eagerly push into the narrow pathway. They brush against my tanned sandaled legs as I saunter through that garden path.

The aroma in that garden was so heady. The flora and foliage cooled the air. That garden was so inviting. A wooden table and four chairs invited you to sit down and enjoy that moment in time in that garden which was filled with peaceful serenity. So much time had passed since then. I will always envision the newspaper and a pipe resting in an ashtray on that table, for Professor Fellner liked to sit there puffing on his pipe as he read his paper. For me, it was a time that is filled with fond memories.

The world outside is sleeping. It is cold. The day has not yet begun. I huddle in my armchair, dressed in a warm robe, as my mind gazes back at the vibrant young girl that I used to be and ponder at how elusive time is.
