Bedlam in the Neighborhood
I am getting quite miffed! For the past three summers the city has decided to dig up our road for one reason or another. The first year they repaved. Last year they decided to destroy all the repaving they had done the previous year. Once more dug up. This time they laid in some pipes. When they were done, at almost the end of summer, just before the Jewish holidays, I sighed a sigh of relief! They’re done, I thought. We can sit outside next summer. Wrong! This summer every week day morning, promptly at seven o’clock, just like in previous years, their machines arrived and begun to shake up the neighbourhood once more! Now what? Now they decided to add traffic lights at the corner and place a school bus stop in front of our house! This used to be a quiet sleepy street, but no more. I noticed quite a few ambulances shrieking as they drive by. Could the reason be the distressed neighbourhood is suffering from heart attacks or nervous breakdowns?
I close my windows and draw my curtains in an effort to keep the dust and noise out. I put on the air conditioners. This is costing me, both monetarily and in peace of mind! It is not even eight o’clock in the morning! Enough! What Bedlam is this?
