I heard a very upsetting story today. I was telling my manicurist that this morning a new tiny black cat come to feed at my doorstep. She came first thing in the morning. She was not skittish. She sat at a safe distance as she watched me put the food on the step. As I closed the storm door, she approached the bowl. I watched her from the house, as she ate. The poor thing was so hungry she practically finished the whole bowl. She licked her chops in satisfaction as she sauntered away. Once she left, I refilled the bowl once more.”My manicurist specializes in house visits. She has her steady weekly appointments and she has ones that call her as needed. Thursdays she comes to me. I told her about my new outdoor cat, she became quite sad. She goes to the house of a couple that both have manicures. They had the sweetest cat. She was beautiful to look at and had the sweetest of disposition. Apparently the poor cat got feline aids. Instead of taking care of her and nurturing her, they threw her out of the house. The poor cat stands behind their door and cries piteously, but to no avail. This miserable couple have since separated. She still gives them both manicures. ‘The poor cat is hungry and sick,’ she would tell them both. They merely shrugged their shoulders and said that the cat is not theirs now. She is not their concern, they said. She could not understand their indifference and cold-hearted cruelty.

Today, when she drove up to that house, she saw one of the neighbors feeding the poor cat. She felt better about that but is still heartbroken. She wondered if she should buy some cat food and leave it in her car for when she goes there.

I just cannot imagine what kind of monsters behave this way? It is heartless and inhumane! Once you take responsibility for a living creature, they are yours for life! It is the same as casting your child out into the streets. I wouldn’t do that, would you? My heart aches at the dissolution of our society. What is happening to us? Have we lost our integrity? Have we lost compassion? Why have we become so immoral?

Oh, the heartlessness of man… somewhere along the way some of us have developed a hard exterior shell that seems to be impenetrable. When did we become so ruthless and cruel? It makes me feel so sad.
