Nargess’ Baby
Nargess, her mother, and her sister took turns working at the narrator’s parents’ home, each providing support one after the other. Nargess’s marriage brought forth a daughter, but her husband’s desire for a son led to a cruel act of abandoning the baby. In the face of his brutality, Nargess found strength to confront his actions, only to face further abuse and divorce.
Left bruised and devastated, Nargess sought refuge with her neighbors, bearing the physical and emotional pain of loss. With the dawn, she gathered what little she had left, bidding farewell to her temporary sanctuary and returning to her family’s care. Despite the hardships, she found solace in her work and eventually in a new marriage, yet life’s challenges persisted with her husband’s unexpected passing.
Transitioning back to her role at the narrator’s parents’ home, Nargess continued to navigate life’s trials with grace and perseverance, finding moments of joy in motherhood. However, her eventual disappearance during the Revolution marked a sudden departure, leaving unanswered questions and lingering thoughts for those left behind, including the narrator who serendipitously crossed paths with a neighbor in New York, learning of Nargess’s past search for connection and never knowing her fate.
May Nargess’s journey be one of eventual peace and happiness, her legacy remembered with hope and empathy.
