Grandma Stella recalls a night when she was feeling chilled due to prank calls, then later heard classical music and rain, mistaking the sound for a boiling kettle. As the rain and music played a soothing duet, she finally found comfort and drifted into sleep.

Early last night, even though it was a mild evening, I was feeling chilled. Perhaps it was because the night before, someone was making prank calls throughout the night. It took a while before I realized that my phone had a feature that blocks such calls. However, by then it was a bit too late. I was wide awake. At any rate, by about eight o’clock the next evening, I slipped into bed and fell promptly into sleep.

At about midnight, I became aware of the sound of classical music playing and a kettle filled with water, furiously boiling. Something is wrong, I thought, as I struggled through the thick fog of sleep into wakefulness. I lay quietly, with my eyes closed, trying to figure out what it was. Ah! It is not a kettle of boiling water, it is a spat of rain furiously raging! I arose from my warm bed and went to sit on the fauteuil in the corner. I leaned back and closed me fatigued eyes.

The rain has stopped its fury. It is now gently tapping against the windows. The classical music and the rain agree to perform a charming duet. I once more feel chilled. I rise from my armchair and curl up in bed. The rain and the music play a gentle lullaby. Again I drift into sleep, while rain and the music continue to play their lullaby…
