Drifting to Sleep

The persistent rain gently hit the roof and tapped on the windowsills. Their steady pitter-patter finally woke me up from my slumber. I peered at the clock with bleary eyes and groaned. It is only two o’clock in the morning! I closed my eyes and tried to go back to sleep.

No such luck. I tossed and turned trying to get into a comfortable position but it was useless. I shuffled to my old comfortable armchair, cuddled into it, and tried to read. I could not concentrate. Wearily, I dragged myself downstairs to the kitchen for a cup of tea. When I returned, I switched on the radio. Soothing classical music drifted out. I sipped my tea and leaned my head back.

The gentle rain and the music created a spell. Slowly, my eyelids grew heavier and heavier. It was now four thirty. Sleep, illusive sleep, please make me drift back into the fluffy cloud of dreamland, I prayed. Finally, the gentle rain and the music succeeded in lulling me into drifting back into much-needed sleep. Hum to me a lullaby.I closed my eyes and finally drifted into a much desired sleep…
