It was early in the morning. I opened the back door to put out the food for my outdoor cats. I stopped spellbound, holding their food still in my hand. I leaned against the door jamb. A smile spread across my face. I drew in a deep delicious breath. I could feel the change of seasons coming. The air was fresh and scintillating. Summer is on its way out. Soon I will make my whole apple jam, flavoured with cardamoms and rose water to welcome the Jewish New Year. It is a scant month from now. I usually make about two dozen jars and give them to friends and neighbours to wish them a sweet, healthy and a wonderful year.

My heart lightens as I think about the holidays. So many years l have been making this jam, at least fifty two years. I am not sure if I will make as many this year. Each year I say I will make less and each year I go back to buying more apples. Last year Kelly helped me deliver them. We walked up and down the streets in the neighbourhood, placing jars of jam on their door step. They are always labeled, “Wishing you a sweet and joyous Rosh Hashanah!”

Soon the chrysanthemums will start showing off their autumnal colours in our garden beds. Just thinking about the holidays, lightens up my heart.

Yes, autumn is comings with all the joyous celebrations of the Jewish New Year!

I wish each and everyone of you a sweet, healthy and happy Shana Tova!
